Tenerife, covering over 2,000 km², offers a diverse environment, from the dense forests of Anaga to the lunar landscape of Teide National Park. The island is divided into northern and southern parts, each with its own unique climate and landscape. The northern part is wetter and greener with more frequent rainfall, which encourages the growth of lush vegetation and forests. The southern part of the island, on the other hand, is dry and sunny with less rainfall, making it a popular tourist and beach destination with its characteristic lunar landscape. These differences between the north and south influence the range of tourist activities and types of attractions available in different areas of the island.

Tenerife is home to two main airports: the northern airport (Los Rodeos), which is located closer to the northern part of the island and is mainly used for domestic flights and flights to the rest of the Canary Islands, and the southern airport (Reina Sofía), which is located in the south and is the main point for international flights. Transport on the island is provided by an extensive bus network operated by TITSA, which offers connections between towns, airports and tourist attractions.

Teide National Park allows you to climb Spain’s highest mountain either on foot or by cable car, offering breathtaking views. Loro Parque and Siam Park are popular family attractions with abundant flora and fauna and water fun. Historic La Laguna is a cultural and architectural treasure. Anaga, with its hiking trails, attracts naturalists, while the observatory on Teide offers a unique chance for stargazing.

When is the best time to visit Tenerife?

Tenerife enjoys a mild climate all year round, making the island an ideal holiday destination. Summers (June to September) are warm with average temperatures around 24°C to 28°C. Winters (December to March) are mild with average temperatures around 15°C to 20°C. The northern part of the island is usually cooler and wetter, while the south is warmer and drier. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and are ideal for hiking and sightseeing.

How expensive is Tenerife?

Generally speaking, Tenerife is more affordable compared to many European destinations, even the Czech Republic. You will be able to find cheaper food, drinks and even accommodation. Tourist areas can be more expensive, while cheaper options can be found in less touristy areas. Watch out for last minute accommodation, especially in popular destinations. It is also important to consider the season, as prices can rise during the peak tourist season.

How to get around Tenerife?

There are several ways to travel to Tenerife. The TITSA bus service covers the whole island, including connections between the main towns, tourist areas and airports. Buses are affordable and run relatively frequently. For added flexibility, car hire is a popular choice among tourists for exploring remote locations. Depending on the length of the rental, the price for a smaller car rental is around 25-30 euros per day. Taxis are also widely available and offer a convenient, albeit more expensive, alternative to public transport.

Because of the great roads and mostly flawless asphalt, we also recommend renting a motorbike or scooter.

Tenerife is also a popular destination for amateur and professional cyclists. For visitors who prefer an active holiday, there are cycle paths and many walking routes.

How many days do I need to visit Tenerife?

The length of your visit to Tenerife depends on what you want to see and do on the island. For a brief overview of the main attractions around the island, 5 to 7 days might be enough. If you’re interested in exploring in more depth, including hiking, beaches and visiting remote areas, we recommend 10 to 14 days. This will allow ample time to relax and explore the island without rushing.

Do I need cash in Tenerife?

Yes, in Tenerife, unlike on the mainland, it can be useful to carry cash, especially for visits to smaller shops, markets or remote areas. However, most restaurants, shops and tourist attractions also accept credit cards. It is advisable to carry a small amount of cash for smaller expenses and to check payment options at specific locations to be sure.

Is there drinking water in Tenerife?

Tap water in Tenerife is technically drinkable, but due to its high mineral content many people prefer to buy bottled water, which is tastier and considered better for drinking. It is therefore generally recommended to use bottled water for drinking and cooking.
