Planning a summer trip to the Dolomites and looking forward to the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo? From 2025, be prepared for an important change – you can’t get to Rifugio Auronzo by car without booking online in advance. This new feature is designed to make transport easier, protect nature and improve the visitor experience in one of northern Italy’s most visited areas.

This reservation will be available 30 days before the scheduled date of the visit and will be made via the pass.auronzo.info portal. Which locations are affected by the new rule?
This measure does not concern the whole Dolomites, but specifically the southern approach to Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The restriction applies to the toll road from Misurina to the Rifugio Auronzo, which serves as the main starting point for hiking around the iconic three peaks.
If you are planning a trip from this side, a new reservation is essential. On the other hand, access from other directions, for example from the Alta Pusteria, remains open for hiking without the need to register – but without the possibility of driving to the hut.
How to get to Tre Cime without a car?
If you fail to get a reservation, or simply want to avoid driving in the mountains, you have two convenient alternatives. The first is a shuttle bus service from Toblach, which will operate daily from 31 May to 12 October 2025 . This line will take you directly to Rifugio Auronzo. Again, prior online booking is required as the number of connections and capacity is limited.

The other option is to walk up from Lago Antorno, where there is a small car park. From here, the well-marked hiking trail 101 leads you to Rifugio Auronzo in about 1.5 to 2 hours on foot (about 4 km). It’s a beautiful path with views and a quieter atmosphere than the crowded parking lot of the lodge.
Whether you choose to drive, bus or walk, one thing is certain – the views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo are worth every effort. Keep an eye out for more tips and itineraries on Retkee, where you’ll find practical advice and ready-made plans for trips in Italy and across Europe.
