Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The city offers not only a rich history and culture, but also unique experiences. You can take a bike ride through its narrow streets, visit famous museums or sample traditional Dutch delicacies. The city centre is made up of a network of canals ( grachtengordel), part of which is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walk along these canals is a great way to soak up the atmosphere of the city, or you can see the city from a different perspective on a boat cruise.
A little history
Amsterdam was founded in the 12th century as a fishing village on the Amstel River. The name Amsterdam literally translates as ‘dam on the Amstel’. The first canals were mainly used to drain swampy land and to protect against flooding. As the city began to grow, they were also used for transport and trade.
In the “golden age” of the 17th century, it became one of the richest cities in the world thanks to trade and maritime expansion. It was also during this time that the so-called Tulip Fever broke out – speculation in tulip bulbs reached extreme prices, leading to the first economic bubble in history. Today, the Netherlands is the largest exporter of tulips in the world and every spring you can admire millions of blooms all over the Netherlands.
