If you’re planning a trip to the UK in 2025, you may have heard about a new obligation called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). This electronic entry clearance system is becoming a reality and it’s good to know what it means for you as a Czech citizen and how to prepare.
What is ETA and who needs it?
An ETA is an electronic permit that will be required for travellers from visa-free countries, including the European Union. The UK government aims to streamline border controls and provide greater security. Czech citizens planning a short stay, for example for tourism, business or visiting friends, will need to have an ETA processed before they travel.
It is important to note that the ETA is not a traditional visa – it is a simpler process that should be quick and user-friendly. There is a fee to obtain an ETA – £10 per application. An application is required for each member of the ‘expedition’, including children.
Since when is an ETA needed?
Residents of European Union member countries, including the Czech Republic, will be able to apply for an ETA from 5 March 2025 , while the obligation to have an ETA for the journey will apply from 2 April 2025 . For residents of non-EU countries, the obligation applies from 8 January 2025.
How to get an ETA?
The easiest way is to obtain an electronic permit through the official UK ETA app (available for both iOS and Android). To successfully apply, you need a valid passport, a credit card (or the ability to pay with Apple Pay and Google Pay) and the ability to take a photo, just using the app. Alternatively, there is an online form on the website.
A decision will usually be issued within three days, although the government warns that it may take longer. You are allowed to travel to the UK while you are waiting for a decision if you need to visit the country urgently; however, you must apply before you travel.
How long will the ETA be valid?
The ETA will be valid for multiple entries for a period of 2 years. This means you can visit the UK more than once on the same application (but the duration of any one visit should not exceed 6 months). In addition, the application is always linked to a specific passport – so if you change your passport during the 2 years, you will need a new electronic permit.
Do I also need an ETA to transfer in the UK?
The question is whether an ETA is needed for a short layover in London, for example – the answer is (unfortunately) yes, it is. It is a similar system to the US ESTA.

Don’t be discouraged and head to the islands
