The first day in this itinerary is also the last day. We'll explore the sights together, walk around the city and sample local specialties.
The first stop will be the tallest building not only in Reykjavík, but also in the whole of Iceland – Hallgrímskirkja Church. While visiting the church, don’t forget to go to the top of the church, where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the entire city and the surrounding mountains.
You can park directly behind the church, you just need to pay using the Parka app or at the stand.

Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in Iceland and one of the most important symbols of the country. It is located in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, and is named after Hallgrimur Pétursson, an Icelandic cleric and poet. The church was built between 1945 and 1986 and is made of black basalt, which is typical of the Icelandic landscape.
Its design is inspired by Reynisdrangar, two cliffs located in the south of Iceland. The church is 74 metres high and is the tallest building in Iceland. Hallgrímskirkja is a popular tourist destination. The view in the church tower, where the elevator leads, is also great. There is no entrance fee to the church, but there is to this viewpoint. A ticket for one will cost 1 300 ISK (year 2023), which is slightly over 200 CZK. There is a beautiful view of the whole of Reykjavik, so the “investment” is definitely worth it.
With this extraordinary structure towering over virtually all of Reykjavík, it is a beautiful sight from many other places in the city, such as the famous Rainbow Street.
After visiting the church and seeing the whole city of Reykjavík, you’ll be hungry, so it’s time for your first (sweet) snack. For that, head to the famous Brauð & Co bakery, just a few minutes from the main square with the church.

Vyhlášená pekárná Brauð & Co, nedaleko známého kostela Hallgrimskirkja by neměla uniknout nikomu, kdo má rád skořicové šneky a obecně sladké pečivo. Jde o malou prodejnu, ve které se tyto dozlatova upečené šneky přímo pečou.
On the way to the next stop, an area called Rainbow Street, you will find many different souvenir and clothing shops. So if you are a traveler who likes to take things to family or friends, be sure to head to one of the shops.
0.4 km (5 mins)
Rainbow Street is one of the main streets in the capital city of Reykjavík, Iceland. As you might guess, this is due to the painting of the roadway in rainbow colours, which took place in 2015 as a celebration of tolerance as part of the Pride festival. Pride in particular is a popular event in Iceland, and has been repeated annually since 1999. Rainbow Street is a beautiful street and area in general, not only because of the coloring of the road, but also the view of the majestic Hallgrímskirkja Church. There are also many shops and restaurants in the area.
Rainbow Street is not the only road painted in rainbow colours in Iceland. In the north of the island, in the town of Seyðisfjörður, there is a similar street leading to the local church.

Since you must have gotten hungry again on the way, it’s time for another tip on where to eat. And this time it will be a recommendation for 2 establishments that are very different from each other. In price and concept.
The first “restaurant” is a sausage stand. But not just any sausage – it is the famous hot dog, which the former US president, Bill Clinton, stopped here during his visit to Iceland.
Reykjavík • $
A small stand with the legendary hot dog, which was also visited by former US President Bill Clinton. We recommend the “full” version with mustard, ketchup and fried onions.
But if you’re looking for something a little more “fancy” and the sausage didn’t appeal to you (which is a shame), we can recommend a great foodhall just a few dozen meters from the aforementioned sausage stand.
Reykjavík • $$$
Skvělý foodhall, který nabízí zhruba 10 různých možností k jídlu – od pizzy, přes burger až po asijskou kuchyň. Navíc v krásném prostředí v klidné části Reykjavíku.
After the meal, we head to the water. There are 2 stops waiting for us. The first one is a beautiful concert hall – Harpa.
0.6 km (8 mins)
Harpa Concert Hall is a modern concert hall located in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. It is one of the most important architectural structures in Iceland and is a popular tourist destination. The hall was designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and Icelandic architect Olafemurm Eliasson. It is made of coloured glass panels that create a unique and futuristic atmosphere. The concert hall is home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and hosts many international concerts and performances.
Harpa’s location near Reykjavík harbour, just over a kilometre away from the city centre, makes it a must-see not only in Reykjavík, but in Iceland in general. It is a truly beautiful and photogenic building, whatever the weather.
The Harpa concert hall is basically located on the edge of the harbour, from which several boats/companies sail out with the common goal of whale watching. There are countless whales in the area, so it is an interesting trip for 2 – 3 hours with a clear goal – to see a leap or at least a tail. We were lucky enough to recommend Harpa Yachts.
From Harpa, the next stop is only a few hundred metres away, and it is a path right along the water.
0.6 km (8 mins)
Sun Voyager is a statue/sculpture located in Reykjavik, Iceland. It is a popular spot in the capital, especially among photographers. It is also very accessible from the city center, where it is only a few hundred meters away. The statue was created by Jón Gunnar Árnason, an Icelandic sculptor, in 1990. It is made of steel and copper and is in the shape of a ship hurtling into the sun. The statue is a symbol of hope and dreams.
If you visit this place, ideally continue further along the coast towards the next major site, which is the Harpa concert hall.
That’s enough walking, isn’t it? So how about some rest? In Reykjavik we can recommend the excellent Sky Lagoon spa, which offers not only beautiful sea views directly from the spa, but also a sauna ritual or refreshments in the water.
Just remember to book in advance.
8.4 km (14 mins)
Opened in 2021, Sky Lagoon is about 15 minutes’ drive from Reykjavik city centre. There is a large car park on site, which is free of charge. If we had to choose, we would definitely prefer Sky Lagoon over Blue Lagoon.
Buy your tickets in advance on the official Sky Lagoon website, popular times tend to disappear quite quickly. You can choose one of three packages – the basic Pure Lite, which includes admission to the lagoon itself, the second option is Pure, which includes The Seven-Step Ritual, which we definitely recommend, and the Sky Pass, which includes private changing rooms in addition to The Seven-Step Ritual.
The Seven-Step Ritual consists of a sauna, cold mist, scrub, steam and shower. The sauna has a beautiful view of the ocean and is worth it for that at least. The water is around 38 – 40°C.
And if you get hungry again after the spa and would like to go back downtown for a meal, we can recommend another great foodhall.

Foodhall nabízející mnoho možností k jídlu, od Fish & Chips, přes pizzu až po asijské jídlo.
Our one day in Reykjavík is coming to an end with a food tip. If you are also looking for accommodation in the city, we can recommend the Skuggi Hotel.
The centre of Reykjavik is quite small and can be walked through in 1-2 hours. Even so, we recommend primarily using a rental car to get around Iceland – it’s the most cost-effective and convenient way.
Several souvenirs are typical of Iceland. From black salt to woolen clothes and socks to chocolates. We can recommend the aforementioned local salt and chocolates – both of which are easily storable and won’t take up much space in your suitcase.
Take our itinerary around Iceland. In a packed itinerary you'll experience the best Iceland has to offer - waterfalls, black beaches, spas, glaciers and volcanoes.
