Day 1

Carezza and surroundings

On the first day of a long weekend in the Dolomites, we head to the Carezza region, which offers beautiful peaks and postcard-perfect lakes. And one of them will be our first stop.

Specifically, we will visit Lake Carezza, which is one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy. In fact, Lago di Carezza benefits from its location, where it is essentially “hidden” between breathtaking peaks. Unfortunately, this is coupled with the fact that it is a very popular place that is difficult to enjoy on your own.

Even so, Lago di Carezza is well worth the walk, including a short stroll around. It will take you about 1 hour to visit this place.

Lago di Carezza

South Tyrol

Lago di Carezza is one of the many lakes of the Dolomites in Italy. But what makes this relatively small lake special? It is certainly its location, which gives you amazing views not only of the lake itself, but especially of the surrounding Alps. The lake is about 20 kilometres from the town of Bolzano. So if you’re heading to the area, especially in summer, Lago di Carezza should not be missing from your itinerary.

The entire lake can be circumnavigated in a few minutes on a simple trail. However, if you arrive during the peak summer season, be prepared for huge crowds and probably a parking problem. We therefore recommend arriving either early in the morning or later in the afternoon or evening. Simply don’t be put off by the crowds, as the lake and the views are well worth it.

After walking and enjoying the lake, we will take a short transfer to the nearby village of Nova Levante, from where we will take the cable car to the mountain hut Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle. At this point, we will enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and herds of cows.

The cable car to this place goes primarily from the mentioned Nova Levante, but there are several ways to get to this peak. You can see it clearly on the attached official map.

Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle

Carezza

Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle (Kölner Hütte) is a mountain hut in the Dolomites in northern Italy, located at an altitude of 2,339 metres in the province of South Tyrol, near the Coronelle Pass. The hut can be reached by various hiking trails, for example from the village of Carezza/Karersee or from the top station of the Paolina cable car. If you want to save some time and especially calories, you can easily reach the top by taking the Carezza Dolomites cable car from the town of Nova Levante.

The location of the chalet offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Dolomites, famous for its rock formations and varied Alpine flora. Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle is a popular destination for hikers and climbers to experience the beauty and adventure of this unique mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, there are several beautiful ferrata in the area that should not be missed as an adventurer.

Near the summit you will find, for example, the beautiful Lago di Carezza, which we definitely recommend visiting.

On the way back to Nova Levante we can recommend a stop at the local “steakhouse”.

After climbing the peaks, either on foot or by cable car, our next stop is the town of Brixen. We’ll head back to the highway to this Austrian-Italian town, which, although it’s in Italy, you better believe you’ll feel just like you’re in Austria.

Brixen

South Tyrol

Brixen (Italian: Bressanone) is a town in northern Italy, located in the province of South Tyrol. It lies in the valley of the Eisack River, surrounded by Alpine peaks, which provides breathtaking scenery and the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. The town is easily accessible, close to the main transport arteries, and well connected to the surrounding towns and villages. This makes Brixen a popular starting point for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, who can take advantage of its proximity to the Dolomites for hiking, skiing in winter and other sporting activities in the beautiful Alpine countryside. Nearby are, for example, Seceda, Lago di Carezza and it is also a nice stop on the way to Lago di Garda.

Brixen is rich in history and culture, as evidenced by its medieval monuments, narrow cobbled streets and beautiful buildings. Brixen Cathedral dominates the town and, together with the Bishop’s Palace and other historic buildings, creates a unique atmosphere.

Before we conclude the first day, we’ll tip a good restaurant right in the city centre. In addition to the food recommendations, we should also have a tip on accommodation. Brixen will be our starting point for the next day, from where we will head further into the Dolomites.
