A large car park is located at the upper Lago di Fusine Superiore. If you walk towards the lake to the end of the road, you will definitely come across it. The car park provides plenty of spaces for cars in the first part and a specially reserved area behind for vans, motorhomes and caravans. During the day there is a ban on taking out camping equipment. Picnic tables and benches can be found near the car park. This is a unique place to park in a quiet setting in close proximity to hiking and biking trails and the lake. New restrooms are available at the lake, otherwise there are no other services. The price of parking for one day is 15€. The great thing is that you can stay overnight. This place will give you an unforgettable experience in a beautiful setting and we definitely recommend you take advantage of this opportunity.
Laghi di Fusine are two glacial lakes located in the north-east of Italy near the Slovenian border. Without a doubt, they are one of the most beautiful lakes in the Alps. Their enchanting setting provides the ideal destination for an active holiday in the mountains of Italy.
These lakes – Lago Superiore and Lago Inferiore – are hidden between dense coniferous forests and the imposing peaks of the Alps. The most important and highest of these is Mount Mangart. The area is home to a rich flora and fauna, so you may come across deer, squirrels or foxes while walking through the forest. The lakes are home to a variety of fish species as well as many waterfowl.
In summer, nature lovers will find countless opportunities for hiking, cycling or camping. We recommend, for example, the hiking circuit to Monte Cuzzelli via the Alpe Adria Trail. But the area around the lakes offers many trails of varying length and difficulty. If you like winter sports, it is the winter months that turn the landscape into a skiing paradise. Whether you want to relax, take photos or have a picnic on the shore, everything is possible here. Thanks to the crystal clear glacial water, the lakes have a beautiful azure colour that attracts photographers. At the lower lake there is a café where you can taste authentic Italian coffee and light meals. These can be enjoyed on the terrace directly above the lake. You can also hire small wooden boats to take you around the lake. At the upper lake, there are newly built sanitary facilities, parking and RV spaces, as well as picnic tables and benches for relaxing.
Although the area is not overcrowded with tourists, you can see that it is starting to gain popularity. New cabins and stalls with refreshments and local products are springing up in the area. If you’re looking for a destination in the Italian Alps where you can still enjoy the tranquillity and sheer beauty of nature, you’ll love this area.
The journey from the Czech Republic to Laghi di Fusine will take quite a long time. But we managed it in one go thanks to the comfortable motorways across Austria. The journey takes around 7 hours plus breaks. We recommend starting early in the morning to catch the sunset at Laghi di Fusine, enjoy the atmosphere and explore the surroundings. You will park at the lake, which is high up and from where the road does not continue. We have a tip for a great walk around both lakes, with a stop at a café on the second lake. The walk will take you no more than an hour and a half, has no inclines and is truly magical – after a day in the car, it will definitely come in handy.
