If you dream of seeing breathtaking, endless meadows of blooming tulips without crowds, you’ve come to the right place. I’ll take you there. In spring, this picturesque landscape will feel like a painting by Vincent van Gogh. No wonder he was so inspired by it. It’s an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime and want to experience again. We’ll stop by the sea at sunset and end the day with a walk on the beach.

I’ll be happy to tell you when and where to take beautiful photos and then we’ll go to Amsterdam together. There you will try the best truffle fries, caramel waffle, fresh oysters and taste several types of aged gouda. We won’t miss a romantic stroll along the canals, where the typical architecture is reflected in the water and will fascinate you at every turn. Are you ready for an adventure?

Flight tickets

I recommend buying tickets to Amsterdam well in advance, ideally six months in advance. The earlier you buy, the lower the price you pay. It's definitely not worth waiting here, as the price of a ticket rises to astronomical heights during tulip season and these are definitely some of the most expensive tickets to a European destination. You can fly direct from Prague with easyJet or from Vienna with KLM.

Car rental

You can rent a car directly at the airport, which I recommend due to the better prices compared to renting in the city.

AVIS Car Rental Amsterdam

100 €

Book

There are several companies to choose from, we chose AVIS and a 24-hour rental including insurance for a small but stackable Hyundai i20 cost us 123€. If you book the car online, you get a better price.

Greenwheels

29 €

Book

Also worth mentioning is greenwheels car sharing, an electric car sharing service that gets you everywhere thanks to zero emissions, and you’ll appreciate it especially in the city. The downside is that you have to return it to the same place where you rented it and you need a mobile app to do so.

Accommodation

The best place to stay is directly in Amsterdam. I can recommend the Eden Hotel Amsterdam, which is modern and located right in the city centre.

Moderní hotel na skvělém místě, přímo v centru v Amsterdamu. Pokoje jsou zde sice menší, nicméně nabízí vše potřebné a je zde i možnost dobré snídaně.

Day 1

A visit to the tulip meadows

After arriving in Amsterdam, we head straight for the tulips in the northern part of the country, the Fluwel region. We will rent a car directly at the airport in Amsterdam and make sure to stop for coffee and something sweet. Our destination is about an hour and a quarter away, during which we will meet other tulip fields and stop at whichever one catches our eye in terms of colour. For lunch we will sample the specialties at a local restaurant. Fluwel is characterized by endless tulip fields, wooden mills and fresh wind from the sea. We won't miss that either and end the day with a walk in the sand dunes.

1

Coffee District

Coffee District, Olympiaplein, Amsterdam, Nizozemsko

This place is a great stop on the way from the airport for a choice coffee and cardamom bun.

You can reach the tulip fields from Amsterdam by train and bike in high season, but if you like to have the place to yourself, you’ll appreciate renting a car.

It’s definitely money well invested because you can stop at any field you want, see several of them in different color combinations. You can also look at the more remote parts and the sea, which is well worth it.

2

Alkmaar

Alkmaar, Nizozemsko

Around Alkmaar, you’ll find beautiful tulip meadows in glowing colour combinations in season. We came across this place by chance on our way to Land Van Fluwel and it is definitely worth a mention and a short stop.

3

Bergen Binnen

Bergen Binnen, Bergen, Nizozemsko

We tasted our first Dutch oysters here and they were absolutely delicious. The menu is mainly fish, beef, seafood and Danish specialties. A very nice restaurant in a small town that is definitely worth a stop for lunch or dinner on the way to our destination Land Van Fluwel.

20.3 km (24 mins)

The weather in the Netherlands is very changeable in spring, so we decided to rent a car on the spot according to the forecast for the following days. Tulips do look better under the sunshine after all. It’s best to check the percentage of tulips in bloom before you go on the fluwel.com website, where they update the number of tulips in bloom and the number of tulips harvested per bulb.

Land van Fluwel

Fluwel

Land van Fluwel is a theme park in the northern part of the country where you can learn all about tulips. From their origins in the Himalayas to how they look today. Curiosities about growing and harvesting are no exception. I myself was intrigued by the fact that the flowering tulips are actually such a secondary product. The most important thing is the bulbs, which are sold by farmers all over the world. Therefore, at a certain stage, the tulips are cut down so that all the energy goes into the bulbs and they get the nutrients they need. You can buy them here and take them home with you.

Children will also enjoy the slides, climbing frames and other attractions.

Explore your surroundings and fly your drone.

The most beautiful part of this place is of course the surroundings. It is surrounded on every side by differently coloured tulip fields that lead down to the sea. You can explore them from different directions. In the distance, new windmills spin in the distance, creating a unique atmosphere that you can only experience here. Because of the light, I recommend a visit in the late afternoon, ideally in the golden hour. If you’re an early bird and head east, you’ll probably be all alone here. This place may be more remote from Amsterdam, but it makes up for it with beautiful scenery just for you. It’s the perfect place to drone, as you’ll shoot lots of ropes in a row without distractions. After exploring and shooting, you can go and relax by the sea, which is a really short drive away.

Due to the effects of global warming, you will not know far enough in advance what stage of flowering the tulips are in, whether they are in full bloom or already flowering. The ideal time to visit is the second half of April, when the tulip fields are in bloom. For more accurate information, you can check the websites of the respective sites, which publish the percentage of tulips in bloom and also inform you if the tulips have been cut.

Hondsbossche Dunes

Hondsbossche

Due to global warming and rising sea levels, the risk of frequent flooding is increasing on the Dutch coast. In 2015, a project was completed that is designed to withstand heavy storm surges and rising North Sea levels.

The man-made sand dunes and beach stretch along the Dutch North Sea coast from Petten to Camperduin and are 7 km long.

It is the perfect place for a walk on the beach, a picnic and watching the sunset. Parking is available in the adjacent car park.
