If you are travelling from anywhere, we recommend arriving in Šumava, more precisely in the Ore Mountains, around lunchtime at the latest, so that you have enough time to explore the entire programme in the itinerary. First we will visit the beautiful Kašperk Castle and walk around its surroundings, stopping in the town of Krušné hory with refreshments in a delicious bistro. We then move on to a nice lookout point above the Ore Mountains and then to the small village of Kvilda in the heart of the Šumava Mountains, where you can rest, have a snack and find a place for a wild parking for the first night.
Kašperk Castle towers high above the Šumava landscape, specifically in the Klatovy district of the Pilsen Region. It is the highest royal castle in the Czech Republic and its history dates back to 1356, when it was founded by Emperor Charles IV as a guard fortress protecting gold-bearing areas and trade routes.
A visit to Kašperk is an experience not only because of its medieval architecture and the history it hides. The surrounding countryside of Šumava is breathtaking and offers many opportunities for walks and hiking trips. The castle is surrounded by dense forests and meadows where you can observe local wildlife. It is therefore an ideal place for nature and history lovers.
If you’re planning a family outing, the kids will love discovering the secret corners of the castle and hearing stories about the knights and legends associated with the place. Some of the paths leading to the castle are paved, making it easy for families with strollers to access. Dogs are welcome too, with the exception of tours. These are held regularly during opening hours. Check here for more information.
In the vicinity of the castle you will also find several guesthouses and restaurants where you can taste local Šumava specialties and relax after a busy day full of adventure. Transportation to Kašperk is easy – you can drive here and park near the parking lot downstairs, or use local bus connections.
In the courtyard of the castle, where you can enter for free, there are clean toilets and many benches for rest or refreshments.

Once the food is ready at the second stand, the target will flash. The menu includes grilled food and drinks. Prices are reasonable. There is a clean restroom, covered seating and additional wooden tables with benches. Please note, only open during castle visiting hours. In the town of Kašperské Hory you can experience a mix of cultural experiences. Walking through the historic centre offers the opportunity to admire well-preserved buildings that reflect the rich history of the area. Parking at the Ski Resort Kašperské hory. Plenty of space for cars or motorhomes, close to ski lifts and hiking trails.
Beautiful place in the vicinity of the Golden Brook. On the slopes, on the way past the mining tunnels, you can see the remains of medieval gold mining. The forest in this area is really beautiful and you won’t come across tons of tourists. We also recommend taking your pets if you have any with you. The hike from the parking lot to the viewpoint will take you less than an hour and a half, covering a little more than 4 km. The route can also be taken directly from the parking lot of the center of Kašperské Hory, you just have to extend it a bit, so it’s up to you which option you choose.

The Srní wolf enclosure is one of the most visited places in Šumava. And no wonder – it is a beautiful nature trail where you can see several wolves in their pack from a 300-metre long and 3-4-metre high footbridge. The sight of wolves in their “natural” environment is breathtaking and definitely worth a visit.
Dogs are not allowed in the wolf enclosure in Srní, but you can use the dog huts at the information centre.
In the area of Srní and Šumava in general, there are many beautiful places to stay. Here are some examples:
