Places in the Šumava Itinerary

There is something for everyone in this itinerary, whether it is a tour of the beautiful Kašperk Castle, the Šumava countryside or the architecture of the small towns in the area. The right adventure can’t be without delicious food, so here are some tried-and-tested tips for cafés, modern bistros and traditional classics for every day.

Places in the Šumava Itinerary

You will make this journey in your motorhome. It doesn’t matter if it’s a smaller car with sleeping bags, a converted motorhome or a mobile home on four wheels. Overnight parking tips are 100% safe and specifically designed for overnight parking. You will experience 3 different types of “accommodation” for your mobile pet, namely a stellplatz, or caravan site with electricity, a camping site surrounded by nature and one of the best campsites in the Bohemian Forest with luxury facilities. You’ll have plenty of time in the early evening to enjoy your campsite and blend in with nature, which, along with the considerable financial savings, is one of the biggest advantages of travelling in a motorhome. So you won’t be bored.

Day 1

Kašperské hory and Kašperk Castle

If you are travelling from anywhere, we recommend arriving in Šumava, more precisely in the Ore Mountains, around lunchtime at the latest, so that you have enough time to explore the entire programme in the itinerary. First we will visit the beautiful Kašperk Castle and walk around its surroundings, stopping in the town of Krušné hory with refreshments in a delicious bistro. We then move on to a nice lookout point above the Ore Mountains and then to the small village of Kvilda in the heart of the Šumava Mountains, where you can rest, have a snack and find a place for a wild parking for the first night.

1
Kašperk Castle

Kašperk Castle

Kašperské hory

Kašperk Castle towers high above the Šumava landscape, specifically in the Klatovy district of the Pilsen Region. It is the highest royal castle in the Czech Republic and its history dates back to 1356, when it was founded by Emperor Charles IV as a guard fortress protecting gold-bearing areas and trade routes.

A visit to Kašperk is an experience not only because of its medieval architecture and the history it hides. The surrounding countryside of Šumava is breathtaking and offers many opportunities for walks and hiking trips. The castle is surrounded by dense forests and meadows where you can observe local wildlife. It is therefore an ideal place for nature and history lovers.

If you’re planning a family outing, the kids will love discovering the secret corners of the castle and hearing stories about the knights and legends associated with the place. Some of the paths leading to the castle are paved, making it easy for families with strollers to access. Dogs are welcome too, with the exception of tours. These are held regularly during opening hours. Check here for more information.

In the vicinity of the castle you will also find several guesthouses and restaurants where you can taste local Šumava specialties and relax after a busy day full of adventure. Transportation to Kašperk is easy – you can drive here and park near the parking lot downstairs, or use local bus connections.

In the courtyard of the castle, where you can enter for free, there are clean toilets and many benches for rest or refreshments.

Asphalt parking lot directly under the Kašperk Castle. From the car park it is only 15-20 minutes walk to the castle and the walk is really beautiful. The parking lot is large enough for cars, motorhomes and buses. It is possible to buy a parking ticket for 24 hours for 60 CZK. Payment is possible by coins, banknotes or card. Opposite the car park you will find an excellent restaurant in the guesthouse Rychta na Račánku. There are many possibilities for other walks in the surroundings.

Castle grill

Right in the courtyard of Kašperk Castle there is a refreshment stand with two parts. At the first stand you can order food and drink and you will be given an electronic target with a number. Once the food is ready at the second stand, the target will flash. The menu includes grilled food and drinks. Prices are reasonable. There is a clean restroom, covered seating and additional wooden tables with benches. Please note, only open during castle visiting hours. If you are hungry on a walk around the castle, we recommend this place for refreshments.

The first stop on your journey is Kašperk Castle, which has its beautiful courtyard open daily except Mondays and depending on the season until 16:00 or 18:00. A beautiful walk through the Šumava countryside on a marked trail leads to the castle from the car park. From the car park, it takes around 15-20 minutes to walk up to the castle. On the way back we recommend extending the route to Pustý hrádek and Zámecký vrch. This trek is just over 4 km long and can be done in an hour and a half.

Kasperske mountains

Kašperské Hory, Czechia

In the town of Kašperské Hory you can experience a mix of cultural experiences. Walking through the historic centre offers the opportunity to admire well-preserved buildings that reflect the rich history of the area. You can also visit the local Šumava Museum to learn more about the history and culture of the region. In summer and spring, Kašperské Hory hosts various cultural events, festivals and concerts that bring the town to life. For art lovers, there are several galleries with exhibitions of local and international artists. If you are hungry, visit one of the traditional Czech restaurants, the Kašperské brewery or modern cafés offering great coffee and cakes. The Šumava Spa is also nearby, should you feel like a restorative treatment.

Amália valley viewpoint

Vyhlídka Amálino údolí, Kašperské Hory, Czechia

Beautiful place in the vicinity of the Golden Brook. On the slopes, on the way past the mining tunnels, you can see the remains of medieval gold mining. The forest in this area is really beautiful and you won’t come across tons of tourists. We also recommend taking your pets if you have any with you. The hike from the parking lot to the viewpoint will take you less than an hour and a half, covering a little more than 4 km. The route can also be taken directly from the parking lot of the center of Kašperské Hory, you just have to extend it a bit, so it’s up to you which option you choose.

Wolf enclosure Srní

Wolf enclosure Srní

Srní

The Srní wolf enclosure is one of the most visited places in Šumava. And no wonder – it is a beautiful nature trail where you can see several wolves in their pack from a 300-metre long and 3-4-metre high footbridge. The sight of wolves in their “natural” environment is breathtaking and definitely worth a visit.

Dogs are not allowed in the wolf enclosure in Srní, but you can use the dog huts at the information centre.

Accommodation nearby

In the area of Srní and Šumava in general, there are many beautiful places to stay. Here are some examples:

Caravan park, or stellplatz, in the centre of the village of Kvilda. Right next to the grocery store, a great fast food restaurant Wild Burgers with burgers, restaurants, bakeries, cafes or even a brewery. Pay online via the website, on the spot via QR code, or at the bistro. Drinking water or a chemical toilet spout is available on site for refilling. Year round operation and space for 10 motorhomes. There is usually plenty of room even if you arrive late in the evening. Paid but 100% safe place to spend the night with your motorhome with electricity hooked up and a very friendly owner. Summer season (1.4. – 30.9.) = 400,- CZK/night. Winter season (1.10. – 31.3.) = 600,- CZK/night.

This caravan pitch is your refuge for the first night. Even if you arrive later and it’s not a peak season weekend, you should have no problem finding a spot. There’s also electricity and the option to top up fresh drinking water, so you won’t be short of anything here. If it’s still open, we recommend stocking up on groceries at the convenience store next door or replenishing at the nearby restaurants, of which there are many.
