Lipno in southern Bohemia offers more than meets the eye. And this is despite the fact that the area is not so touristically developed, unless we look only at Lipno nad Vltavou, which is the farthest away in this area. Beautiful views of the reservoir, nature trails, peat bogs and restaurants with great food. This and much more is the focus of our three-day itinerary, which is built for everyone – couples, families and dog walkers.

Day 1

Surroundings of Lipno nad Vltavou

We will start our three-day itinerary in probably the most famous part of the Lipno reservoir, in the vicinity of Lipno nad Vltavou.

The first stop, if you are travelling from České Budějovice along the new section of the D3 motorway, will be the Čertova stěna rock formation before Lipno nad Vltavou. You can park in the adjacent car park, from where it is only a few hundred metres uphill to the rocks.

Čertova stěna (Devil’s wall)

Vyšší Brod

The Devil’s Wall is a rock formation located just a few kilometres from the Lipno reservoir in southern Bohemia. The area was formed by the weathering of a granite massif, which is especially visible on the slope from the top. Especially from a bird’s eye view (from a drone), there is a beautiful view of the aforementioned hillside full of granite stones that lead almost to the bank of the Vltava River, which flows under the rocks.

A very accessible forest road leads to the Devil’s Wall, near which you can park. It is a short stop on the way to Lipno or the border with Austria.

7.6 km (9 mins)

From the Devil’s Wall we head further, already to Lipno nad Vltavou. There we can recommend a great lunch at the MOLO Bistro, which you will find (as the name suggests) on the banks of the Lipno River in the beautiful Molo Lipno Resort, which will be expanded in the coming months.

Just near the bistro, we recommend a short walk to the pier, which offers a beautiful view of the reservoir in every season. We visited the pier between the holidays in December 2024, when the water in the reservoir was mostly frozen.

MOLO Bistro

Lipno nad Vltavou • $$

A beautiful bistro on the banks of the Lipno reservoir, offering slightly more expensive dishes, but with very good quality ingredients and a good idea and presentation. When visiting Lipno nad Vltavou we can definitely recommend it. If you are looking for something even more exclusive, there is the MOLO Restaurant from the same owners.

Lipno nad Vltavou

Lipno nad Vltavou

Lipno nad Vltavou is a picturesque town in southern Bohemia, situated on the banks of the Lipno Dam, one of the largest and most beautiful waterworks in the Czech Republic. This place is a popular destination for lovers of swimming, water sports, fishing, cycling and hiking. The Lipno Dam, created on the Vltava River, is not only an important tourist destination, but also an important source of hydroelectric power and water for South Bohemia.

An important attraction of Lipno nad Vltavou is the Treetop Trail, which provides an unusual experience of walking at a height of up to 40 metres above the ground. Visitors can admire a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Lipno and the surrounding Sumava countryside. The trail is accessible all year round and offers a combination of natural beauty and architecture. The viewpoint can be reached by a short walk or by cable car.

Lipno nad Vltavou and its surroundings offer a wide range of accommodation, from campsites and cottages to luxury hotels, which makes this region an ideal place for rest and relaxation in the middle of nature. A promenade runs along the lake and beaches where you will find several refreshment stands. If you are hungry, there are traditional and modern restaurants in the town centre to choose from.

After refreshments, we will go to the highlight of the first day, which will be a visit to the Lipno Treetop Trail. Although it is not a cheap affair, we have to admit that the trail is very nicely made and the trip is really worth it.

We chose the yellow hiking trail from the U Kramolína parking lot – it was a short and easy walk up a slight hill with crossing one of the slopes, where you need to be careful in winter (and during the lift operation). But there are more ways to get to the trail – for example by cable car from Lipno nad Vltavou or by bus.

Quite a large parking lot at the Lipenská cable car in Lipno nad Vltavou. The parking lot is a great starting point for a short walk to the Lipno Treetop Trail, the Kingdom of the Forest and the aforementioned cable car with a ski slope. The car park is pay and display, however in our case the machine was out of service in December 2024.

Trail through the treetops Lipno

Lipno nad Vltavou

Above Lipno nad Vltavou and the water reservoir of the same name, the Treetop Trail rises at the top of Kramolín. It is a 40-metre high wooden structure with metal elements, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view not only of the reservoir, but also of part of Šumava and the Novohradské hory. The entire trail, which was opened in 2012, is wheelchair accessible and the path to the top is very gradual – you can manage it with a stroller and smaller children – just be careful, dogs are not allowed on the trail. However, there are pens for them.

The journey to the top of the trail takes about 10 – 15 minutes, there are several smaller attractions and educational boards along the way – especially for children. The way down can be “shortened” by descending in a 52-metre long dry slide. However, it may not be open all year round.

Although it is not a completely cheap affair, we must admit that it is a beautiful trip in the Lipno area. You can get to the top of the trail either by paid transport from Lipno nad Vltavou, by chairlift or on foot. We chose the third option and took the yellow trail from the parking lot at Kramolín, from where it is less than 2 kilometers to the top. If you go here in winter, you need to think about the fact that you will have to cross the slope.

Near the Treetop Trail there is also the Lipno Forest Kingdom Park, another great attraction for children. However, it is not open year-round like the trail.

In the vicinity of the Treetop Trail you can also visit the Kingdom of the Forest, which is open from March to November. So don’t count on visiting in the winter months. In the winter, on the other hand, you can put on your skis and head to one of the many slopes in the immediate vicinity of the trail.

Day number 1 is slowly but surely coming to an end. Before we list 2 tips for accommodation directly in Lipno nad Vltavou and nearby Černá v Pošumaví, we have to mention one quite important thing. If you want to go shopping in the Lipno area and it’s a weekend, let’s say later in the afternoon or evening, you basically have only one option, and that’s the 24/7 Supermarket Coop right in Lipno nad Vltavou. Other shops, for example in Frymburk or Horní Plana, are usually closed later in the day and especially at the weekend.

As far as accommodation is concerned, we can recommend Hotel Element and also the Panelka Costa Plana Lipno apartments in Černá v Pošumaví.
