Bergamo

Bergamo is a picturesque town in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. The town is divided into two parts: the Città Alta (upper town) and the Città Bassa (lower town). The historic town is famous for its medieval walls, magnificent churches and amazing views. In Città Alta, the old town on the hill, you will find narrow streets, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Palazzo della Ragione and the Torre Civica. Another attraction is the Bergamo Walls, historic fortifications built in the 16th century that surround Città Alta. For art lovers there is the Accademia Carrara, a renowned art gallery with a rich collection of paintings. Piazza Vecchia is the main square of Città Alta with many historic buildings, cafes and restaurants.

In terms of transport, Bergamo is easily accessible by train from Milan and takes around 50 minutes. The city also has its own international airport, known as Orio al Serio, which is one of the main airports for low-cost airlines and is relatively close to the city centre.

The city itself is not that big, so you can get around on foot. If you’ve done a lot of walking, there are buses available, or you can rent a bike. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year, so be sure to check out the schedule while you’re here.

In Bergamo, you can sample several traditional Lombard dishes. A local speciality is Casoncelli, a type of ravioli filled with meat and other ingredients. Polenta, a classic Northern Italian dish made from corn flour, is another popular choice. Finally, if you’re in the mood for dessert, you should try Stracciatella, a special flavor of ice cream from Bergamo.
