Place description
The Parish Church of Saint Giles (Ägidius) stands right in the center of Altaussee, just a short walk from the lake. The first mention of it dates back to 1224, but it has held its current form since 1434—that year is carved above the western portal. Between 1859 and 1861, the church underwent a reconstruction funded by the foundation of Emperor Franz Joseph I, which gave it its sacristy, side chapel, and the current look of the portals.
Inside, a stone tabernacle (sanctuary) from around 1520 has been preserved, along with the remains of six Gothic stained-glass windows in the presbytery. One curiosity is worth mentioning: an exact copy of this church was built in 1882 in the village of Sedliacka Dubová, Slovakia, based on its plans. We stopped by the church on our way from the lake, so a visit can easily be combined with a loop around Altausseer See. The church is dedicated to Saint Giles, whose feast day on September 1st is associated with the traditional Kirtag festival in the village.
