The Fagradalsfjall volcano, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the southwestern part of Iceland, is one of the country’s newest volcanic attractions. After nearly 800 years of inactivity, the eruption in March 2021 attracted worldwide attention. The eruption, characterised by lava fountains and flowing lava flows, created a fascinating volcanic landscape. There are several hiking trails leading to the volcano, but it is important to keep up to date.

Due to more recent eruptions on the peninsula and in the Grindavík area, this area has been closed to the public – so always check that you will not be breaking the current rules before attempting to visit the site.

We have visited Fagradalsfjall 3 times, twice in September 2021. Our first visit was just a few days after the eruption had stopped. We saw a volcano that was no longer active, but it was still an unforgettable sight. At the end of our trip around Iceland, a few hours before our flight back to the Czech Republic, it woke up again and we took a quick evening hike to the red-lit landscape, just away from the ongoing eruption – again a great experience!

Our last visit was in April 2023, when the volcano was no longer active, but it was still smouldering in several places.
