The Forum Romanum was once the busiest place in all of Rome – a kind of ancient centre of the city where crowds met, laws were debated, business was conducted, political debates were held and great triumphs were celebrated. Today we walk among the columns and crumbling temples with a camera in hand, but two thousand years ago emperors, senators and common craftsmen walked here. The place has an incredible atmosphere – to walk along the ancient pavement and imagine how Julius Caesar or Cicero once spoke to the crowds here is a truly powerful experience.

Here you will see the remains of magnificent temples, such as the Vesta, where the sacred fire once burned, the famous triumphal arches or the remains of the old courtrooms. And if you climb the adjacent Palatine Hill, you’ll not only get a beautiful view of the entire Forum, but also the chance to see the remains of Roman imperial palaces. It was here, according to legend, that a she-wolf nursed Romulus and Remus – and it was Romulus who was to found Rome on this spot.

Admission and recommendations

Tickets to the Forum are bought together with the Colosseum and the Palatine, cost 18 euros and must be booked online – even several weeks in advance, as there is a huge demand. It’s open every day from 8:30am and closing times vary according to the season. The best time to visit? Definitely first thing in the morning, when the grounds are still quiet and the sun’s rays hit the old ruins in a way that gives it a completely different atmosphere than later in the day.
