Goðafoss Waterfall, located on the Skjálfandafljót River in the northern part of Iceland, is one of the most beautiful and important waterfalls on the island. Its name, which translates as “waterfall of the gods”, is linked to a legend that in 1000 AD, the chieftain Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw statues of pagan gods into the waterfall as a sign of Iceland’s acceptance of Christianity. The waterfall is approximately 30 metres wide and the water falls from a height of 12 metres, creating a beautiful cascade that is a popular destination for tourists and photographers.
The surroundings of Goðafoss Waterfall provide a great opportunity for walking and exploring Icelandic nature. Easy access from the main road makes the waterfall a popular stop on the way between Akureyri and Mývatn. In the winter months, the waterfall turns into an icy wonder when the surrounding landscape is covered in snow and ice, which adds a special charm to the place. Regardless of the season, Goðafoss is a fascinating place that leaves visitors in awe of Iceland’s natural beauty.
