The pastel-coloured geothermal area of Hverir, with its steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pools, is a short distance from Lake Mývatn. The very distinctive smell of sulphur will be wafting through you all the time. Hverir is one of the most active geothermal areas and plays with all the colours. At a depth of 1,000 metres, the temperature exceeds 200 °C. The water that flows beneath the surface is quickly heated and returns to the surface converted into steam. Along with the steam, gases such as sulphane are released, which is what causes the characteristic smell in these areas.
