Place description
The Certosa di San Martino is a monumental former Carthusian monastery on Vomero Hill in Naples. Today it serves as a museum and is one of the finest examples of Neapolitan Baroque. The monastery was founded in the 14th century, but acquired its present form thanks to a 17th-century rebuilding. Visitors will be impressed not only by the richly decorated Church of St Martin, the courtyard with its marble columns and the quiet cloister gardens, but also by the extensive collections in the museum dedicated to the history of Naples, traditional nativity scenes and art. Thanks to its location, the monastery also offers one of the most spectacular views of the city, the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius.
