The Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden dams, just above Kaprun, are open from about mid-May to mid-October. The dams themselves are in an area that can only be reached by dedicated buses from the Kaprun Stauseen car park. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office, and if you have a Zell am See-Kaprun Card, you get in for free. At the time of our visit (July 2023) the price was €28 per adult, €7 per dog. In the first part you have a bus ride, where the bus goes through a knotty tunnel.

You will get off at the lift platform, which will take you to the next bus. The journey itself takes around 45 minutes. The platform is interesting in itself – it is an outdoor elevator for about 180 people, which in just a few minutes covers an elevation of more than 400 metres. After the elevator, there is one more bus ride, about 10 to 15 minutes, to the upper dam.

Right at the upper dam, Mooserboden, there is a restaurant where you can have a bite to eat. Here is also the largest concentration of tourists. We went for a walk around the area, specifically to the Höhenburg Stauseen lookout. Here you have a steep uphill walk, we recommend sturdy shoes, but it’s not terrible. There is a beautiful view of the surrounding area from here.

Parking

A large multi-storey car park can be found right next to it. We recommend driving as high as possible, ideally to the penultimate floor, you will then be closest to the ticket offices and the exit.
