Říp – a place of legend, history and breathtaking views!
Mount Říp (456 m above sea level) is an unmissable peak of the now extinct volcano, which rises above the Polabská lowland, only 5 km south of Roudnice nad Labem. We finished our pilgrimage from Blaník to Říp – the Journey of the Czech Republic. The mountain, associated with the legend of the arrival of the Czech forefather, is today a symbol of the Czech nation and a place that will captivate you not only with its history, but also with its breathtaking views.
What awaits you on Říp?
At the top of the mountain you will find the Romanesque rotunda of St. George, which was built in the 11th century and is a symbol of Czech history. Inside the rotunda there is a statue of St. George with a dragon. From the top you can enjoy panoramic views of the Bohemian Central Highlands, Kokořínsko and Polabí. Do not forget to visit the place where one of the cornerstones of the National Theatre was taken from Říp.
Easy access for everyone
There are various marked hiking trails leading to Říp, which are suitable for all ages. For families with strollers, we recommend starting at the paid parking lot in Rovny and ascending the mountain from the northeast side. You will need to return along the same route. If you take one of the hiking trails, you can enjoy a relaxing walk with beautiful views.
Rotunda tour and Mass
If you want to explore the rotunda, it is open seasonally. In April, October, and on weekends from May to September, it is possible to visit the rotunda and watch a short documentary about the history of the site. On the first Sunday of the month, there is a Mass, during which it is not possible to take a tour, but if you are interested, you can attend.
According to tradition, every orthodox Czech should climb Mount Říp at least once in his or her lifetime. Therefore, go to Říp and experience an unforgettable experience that combines the beauty of nature, Czech history and legends.
We’ll be happy to create a personalized itinerary.
How to get to Říp?
If you are driving, we recommend parking in the car park in Rovné, from where there is a pleasant path to the top. The journey to the top from the car park takes approximately 30 minutes if you take the most convenient route.
