Poledník (Meridian)

The architecturally interesting lookout stands on the mountain Poledník in Šumava. The third highest lookout tower in the Czech Republic offers one of the best views of the Šumava Mountains. When the visibility is good, you can also see the distant peaks of the Alps. It would be a shame to arrive after the tower’s opening hours, so time your trip well so you don’t miss out on the views.

We took a longer all-day circuit from the village of Prášily to Poledník. The whole route is 17 km long, with a relatively challenging elevation gain of 526 m. If you want to go with kids, leave the strollers at home and try the baby carriers. From the centre of the village, follow the red hiking trail. After about 4 km, it will lead you to Prášil Lake, one of the five glacial lakes in Šumava. An ideal stop for a first snack. We also took out the drone for a while here.

From the lake, continue on the red trail and enjoy a short descent. You will pass through a forest and a clearing where the terrain begins to rise again. This is a sign that you are approaching Poledník. As a reward, get yourself a well chilled beer in the shop right at the lookout tower.

Tip: On the way to Prášily we recommend a stop in Kašperky. Go to the family-run Bistro pod nebem for brunch. The owners are incredibly sweet and the homemade food and desserts will replenish your energy for this more challenging climb.
