The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most famous bridges in Florence and one of the most iconic symbols of the city. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, although the bridge that stands today is the result of reconstructions after floods and fires.
One of the most characteristic features of the Ponte Vecchio are the shops and boutiques that stretch along its length. These shops are traditionally associated with the sale of jewellery, especially goldsmiths’ wares, which gives the bridge a special atmosphere and attracts many visitors from all over the world.
The Ponte Vecchio crosses the Arno River and connects the historic parts of Florence between the Oltrarno and Centro Storico areas. The bridge offers a beautiful view of the river and the surrounding architecture, including palaces and churches.
Historically, the Ponte Vecchio was a place where meat was sold, but in the 16th century all the meat shops were removed and replaced by goldsmiths’ workshops, which was intended to reduce the smell on the bridge. This change contributed to the unique character of the bridge, which it still has today.
