Place description

Predjama Castle, located in the southwestern part of Slovenia, is one of the most photogenic castles in Europe. Built in the 13th century, this unique castle is set into a 123 metre high cliff, giving it a dramatic and mysterious appearance. The castle was built at the entrance to a cave system, giving it a strategic advantage and natural protection. This unique combination of architecture and natural formations makes Predjama Castle one of the most visited tourist destinations in Slovenia.

The history of the castle is as fascinating as its appearance. The castle’s most famous inhabitant was the knight Erazem Lueger, known as the Robin Hood of Slovenia. According to legend, Erazem successfully hid from his enemies thanks to a secret tunnel leading from the castle to the surrounding caves, which allowed him to obtain supplies and escape routes during the siege. Visitors today can explore the castle’s interiors, including the knights’ halls, living chambers and secret passages, and learn more about its rich and turbulent history through exhibitions and guided tours.
