San Gimignano

The centre of this historic city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by 2 km long city walls with entrance gates. The most beautiful of these is the 13th century Porta San Giovanni. The whole time we felt as if we had been teleported to the Middle Ages. Here, all you really need to do is wander the narrow cobbled streets and peek into the little shops selling souvenirs and traditional delicacies.

For the best views of the city and surrounding area, you can climb the Torre Grossa tower. We recommend trying the excellent Tuscan wine Vernaccia and the legendary saffron gelato at Gelateria Dondoli. Sit for a while in the piazza Piazza della Cistarna and enjoy the view of the historic buildings with a coffee in hand.
