The Savica Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in Slovenia and is rightfully one of the most popular destinations in the Lake Bohinj area. The waterfall, which falls from a height of 78 metres into an emerald-coloured pool, is fed by the waters of the Triglav National Park and forms the beginning of the Sava Bohinjka River – one of the sources of the Sava River.
The path to the waterfall leads from the car park at the Koča pri Savici cottage and is approximately 2 km round trip, with an elevation gain of about 120 metres. The trail is well maintained, but it leads mostly on stone and wooden steps (more than 500), so it can be managed by hikers in average condition. However, it is not suitable for strollers or small children who may have difficulty with the hike.
From the viewpoint at the waterfall, you can see not only Savica itself, but also Lake Bohinj, which is just a short distance away and forms a beautiful natural unit with the waterfall. All in all, this is an easy and highly recommended hike that is one of the best things you can experience in the Bohinj area – especially if you are looking for a combination of nature, exercise and views.
The entrance to the waterfall costs EUR 4 per adult, parking at the starting point costs EUR 5 per car. The good news is that dogs are free and unrestricted on the trail – just bring a leash.
