Built in 1379 by Münster’s merchants, St. Lamberti’s Church is a magnificent example of late Gothic architecture. Three iron cages still hang from its tower — a somber reminder of the Münster Rebellion of 1536, when the bodies of its leaders were displayed there. Since 1987, three lights have shone from the cages in memory of their souls.The church’s 90-meter neo-Gothic tower once housed a lookout who kept watch for fires and danger. To this day, a female trumpeter plays from the tower every evening, her horn sounding across the sleeping city.
Since 2022, the “Himmelsleiter” (Heaven’s or Peace Ladder) — a 48-meter illuminated art installation by Viennese artist Billi Thanner — has adorned the tower, symbolizing hope and peace, visible from across the city center.
