Syracuse

Syracuse is an ancient city on the eastern coast of Sicily with a rich history and an important cultural heritage. With roots dating back to ancient times, this city was one of the most important Greek cities in Sicily during classical antiquity, even rivalling Athens in power and influence.

Today Syracuse consists of several parts, the oldest and most characteristic being the island of Ortigia, which lies at the southern end of the city. Ortigia, also called the “heart of Syracuse”, is where the most important monuments are located and where life pulses in the narrow streets and picturesque squares. Oritigia is therefore often considered the centre of Syracuse.

There are the most beautiful squares, regular markets (except Sundays) and countless stalls, restaurants and bars. And what’s worth visiting in Ortigia?

Temple complex of Apollo: This ancient temple is one of the most important monuments in Ortigia. Its impressive remains testify to the glory of ancient Syracuse.

Fountain of Aretusa: An ancient spring fountain, considered one of the oldest in the world. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is a place where tradition meets nature.

St Peter’s Cathedral: this majestic church is located in the Piazza del Duomo and is known for its impressive architecture and magnificent works of art.

Archimedes Square: A picturesque square that is the centre of life in Ortigia. It is surrounded by historic buildings and restaurants and offers a wonderful place to relax and people watch.

Ortigia Cathedral: an ancient church dedicated to St John the Baptist, which towers over the town with a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside.

Aside from the sights, you can’t miss a stroll along the promenade at sunset, where a chilled Italian drink is best enjoyed. This is probably the activity we recommend the most.
