Trolltunga, whose name translates to “Troll’s Tongue”, is undoubtedly one of Norway’s most stunning natural gems. Located in the west of the country, in the high mountains above the enchanting Hardangerfjord, it is a popular destination for nature lovers from all over the world.

A hike to Trolltunga is no walk in the park. The hike is really challenging, taking around 10-12 hours round trip and you will climb several hundred metres of elevation during your journey. The trail passes through beautiful forested areas, past mountain lakes and over stone plateaus. But the reward at the end of this journey is well worth it. When you reach the top, an absolutely breathtaking panorama of the fjord below and the surrounding mountains awaits you.

The site also has a deep spiritual significance. Many visitors describe their experience at Trolltunga as deeply meditative and liberating. It is a place where you can feel the power of nature and realize your smallness in comparison. For those who like to take pictures, this place is absolutely unique, so don’t forget to pack your camera in your backpack!

If you plan to visit Norway, you should definitely not miss this unique natural attraction. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or looking for a unique experience, Trolltunga is a place that will stay in your heart forever.

Parking

There are three official car parks (P1 – P3) with varying prices and distances from Trolltunga. The further away the car park is, the cheaper the parking is. Please note that some car parks require advance booking. A regular pet-friendly shuttle bus runs between the car parks.

P1 Parking in Tyssedal: The furthest car park in Tyssedal is a 7 km walk from the P2 car park in Skjeggedal, where the climb to Trolltunga starts. If you are travelling with a caravan or car longer than 5 metres, you will have to park here as the road further on is too narrow for larger cars and buses. The price for parking is around NOK 300 with a capacity of 220 spaces.

P2 Parking in Skjeggedal: There is a parking lot for cars and small vans, which is the starting point for most of the hikes on Trolltunga. From here, you will hike for about 10 hours with an elevation gain of 1200 m. The price for parking is around NOK 500 with a capacity of 180 spaces.

P3 Parking at Mågelitoppen: this car park can only be used with prior reservation. It has a capacity of 30 spaces, so reservations are required. It is the highest point you can reach by car or motorbike. From here you have a 20 km hike with an elevation gain of 800 m. The price for parking is around NOK 600.

Our tip: Parking in Odda. Park for free in Odda and from there take the shuttle bus to Skjeggedal or another bus to Mågelitoppen.
