Volterra is a beautiful picturesque hilltop town located in the centre of Tuscany, southwest of Florence and west of Siena. For us, Volterra is one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany with an exceptional atmosphere. This ancient town, with roots going deep into the past, is one of the most important historical centres of the region with a unique combination of art, history and culture.

Volterra, also known as the “Etruscan City”, is one of the oldest settlements in Italy. Its history dates back to the Bronze Age and thanks to its strategic location on a hilltop it was the city of the Etruscans. Later it became an important Roman city and in the Middle Ages it became the seat of the powerful Florentine Medici family.

Because of its history, Volterra is rich in archaeological remains of the Etruscan civilization. Among the most important are the Etruscan walls, the Porta all’Arco (Etruscan gate) and the Etruscan tombs.

There is also a beautiful medieval centre. A stroll through the narrow, iconic streets of the centre is sure to enchant. Here you will come across the Volterra Duomo, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the most important religious building in the city, with a magnificent interior decorated with works of art. Don’t forget to visit the Piazza dei Priori, which is the centre of city life and is surrounded by several important historical buildings, including the Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest town hall in Tuscany.
