From Smědava to Paličník, the quiet beauty of the Jizera Mountains

The Jizera Mountains hide dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of various rock viewpoints. In today’s article, we will look at one of them – namely the one on Paličník Hill, which is easily accessible from Smědava above Bílý Potok. Smědava is a good starting point for many places in the area, whether it is Paličník, Frýdlantské cimbuří or the highest mountain in the Jizera Mountains – Smrk.

Smědava is a good starting point not only because of its location, but also because of the large parking lot, where you can park for the whole day for 100 CZK, as well as refresh yourself in the nearby Smědava mountain hut, where they have a great offer of very good food in the season (for example, yeast dumplings:)). Let’s go back to the trip to Paličník.

From the parking lot or the Smědava Mountain Chalet we will follow the green ridge in the direction of Černá Smědá. At this small lake we will reach the first fork, where we will take the left and continue along the green trail. After about 45 minutes of walking we will come across another fork called Předěl. From here, for example, there is also a path to the previously mentioned Smrk – but this time we will take the blue trail towards Paličník. It is this blue trail to the last crossroads before the viewpoint at Paličník that will take us along the ridges, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding highlands.

Černá Smědá

Černá Smědá

Bílý Potok

Černá Smědá is a small lake near Smědava, which you can come across on the way to the highest mountain of the Jizera Mountains, Smrk, or on the way to the Paličník lookout point. It is a small lake with a stream Černý potok flowing through it, which serves mainly as a tourist crossroads, and even in winter months for cross-country skiers.

The lake as such is not really worth a visit, but it is a very nice stop on the way around the area.

After another 30 minutes or so we arrive at the crossroads Pod klínových vrchem, from where it is only a few minutes walk to Paličník. The Paličník viewpoint is then accessible by 2 not quite easy ladders / stairs, but it is really worth the adrenaline and effort. Once you get to the top, you will have a view of a large part of the Jizera Mountains, the Bílý Potok and nearby Poland.

Bílý Potok

The Paličník lookout point, on the Paličník rock, is one of the most beautiful lookout points in the Jizera Mountains with its height of 944 metres above sea level. It offers a beautiful view of the whole Frýdlant region and the Smědava surroundings. Several hiking trails lead to the viewpoint, which is bordered by a metal railing and offers an iconic cross. The easiest way to Paličník is along the green and blue trail from Smědava, from which it is about 5 km away. The path is a combination of asphalt and dirt road and also leads, for example, across the lake Černá Smědá.

An alternative is a hike from the village of Bílý Potok, which leads past several smaller waterfalls. If you want to sweat more, we recommend this route along the yellow trail from Bartlova bouda. Paličník can also be one of the stops on the way to the highest mountain of the Jizera Mountains – Smrk.

From Paličník, you can continue on to Smrk or to the lower village of Bílý Potok – if you would like to go without a car and do not have to return to Smědava, this is one of the options along the yellow trail in the direction of Bartlova bouda. However, if your main destination is Vyhlídka Paličník, you will probably have to take the same route back. This whole trip took us a little over 2 hours and the Apple Watch showed just under 11 km and 225 meters of elevation gain. You can find the entire route on the embedded map from Mapy.cz below.

Next time we are going to go again from Smědava, just on the other side, to the already mentioned Frýdlantské cimbuří, which is one of the other great viewpoints in the Jizera Mountains.
