This resort is ideal for skiers of all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. It offers more than 130 km of pistes that are connected to the wider Dolomiti Superski area, including the famous Sella Ronda circuit. Alta Badia includes several mountain villages, the most famous of which are Corvara, Colfosco, San Cassiano and La Villa. In this itinerary, we will stay in San Cassiano, a picturesque village that is not the first time we have been there and that has grown close to our hearts.

In Alta Badia it is very easy to combine skiing with great gastronomy and wine, and this is one of the reasons why this area has won us over so much. It is the local wine that regularly wins awards at wine festivals. South Tyrol has more than 5,000 hectares of vineyards and around 40 million bottles of wine are produced each year in 160 wineries. The region boasts the highest number of Michelin-starred chefs in the world. Menus are primarily based on local ingredients and incorporate elements of Ladin cuisine. The combination of gastronomy, breathtaking views and great conditions for winter sports make this area the perfect holiday destination, and here’s how to make the most of it.

Day 1

Stop in Innsbruck

On the way to Italy, we recommend a stop or even an overnight stay in Innsbruck. Not only will you spread out your trip nicely, but you'll also discover a beautiful city close to the border.

Innsbruck

Innsbruck

Innsbruck, the gateway to Tyrol, is one of the most important cities in western Austria. It lies in the valley of the Inn River, surrounded by the imposing Alps. The city boasts a rich history and beautiful countryside. Known primarily as a winter sports centre, Innsbruck is also rich in culture and offers many places of interest.

When we go to the mountains, Innsbruck is usually our first stop. This city draws us in with its beautiful historic centre, pastel-coloured houses, azure river, snow-capped peaks in the background and unique atmosphere. No wonder Maximilian I once chose it as the capital of his empire. The most important landmark is the golden roof, the Goldenes Dachl, which can be found on a 15th century Renaissance building right on the main square.

Our favourite place is the town hall tower, Rathaus Glockenturm, which is located right near the golden roof. It offers a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding mountains. The tower is part of the town hall, which was built in the 14th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in Innsbruck. As the construction took place in different periods, you will see different architectural styles mingling here. Other places of interest include the Hofburg, the Imperial Palace and the Hofkirche.

Our favourite is the walk through the park that goes along the river from the Haepinest café to the centre. In spring the river is lined with blooming golden rain, in winter we admire the snow-capped mountains, the murmur of the river and the pastel houses in the background. This place is truly picturesque and photogenic. I’m rooting for the morning light, the lighted houses and the mountain tops, but the sunset here is beautiful too.

Innsbruck is a classic stop on our Tyrol tour. It is the ideal place for a short walk and a choice coffee with something good. If we’re passing through in the morning, we stop here for brunch and a good coffee.

A great café for brunch, light lunch and coffee right by the Innsbruck promenade.

Later on we’ll have a good lunch, grab dinner, or spread our trip out and sleep right here. This town draws us in with its beautiful historic centre, pastel-coloured houses, azure river, snow-capped peaks in the background and a unique atmosphere that is worth enjoying for at least a while.
