Innsbruck, the gateway to Tyrol, is one of the most important cities in western Austria. It lies in the valley of the Inn River, surrounded by the imposing Alps. The city boasts a rich history and beautiful countryside. Known primarily as a winter sports centre, Innsbruck is also rich in culture and offers many places of interest.

When we go to the mountains, Innsbruck is usually our first stop. This city draws us in with its beautiful historic centre, pastel-coloured houses, azure river, snow-capped peaks in the background and unique atmosphere. No wonder Maximilian I once chose it as the capital of his empire. The most important landmark is the golden roof, the Goldenes Dachl, which can be found on a 15th century Renaissance building right on the main square.

Our favourite place is the town hall tower, Rathaus Glockenturm, which is located right near the golden roof. It offers a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding mountains. The tower is part of the town hall, which was built in the 14th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in Innsbruck. As the construction took place in different periods, you will see different architectural styles mingling here. Other places of interest include the Hofburg, the Imperial Palace and the Hofkirche.

Our favourite is the walk through the park that goes along the river from the Haepinest café to the centre. In spring the river is lined with blooming golden rain, in winter we admire the snow-capped mountains, the murmur of the river and the pastel houses in the background. This place is truly picturesque and photogenic. I’m rooting for the morning light, the lighted houses and the mountain tops, but the sunset here is beautiful too.
