Achensee

The Achensee is the largest lake in the Austrian Tyrol, surrounded by the Alps and is a popular destination for nature lovers with plenty of activities.

The lake attracts with its crystal clear water, ideal for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and other water sports, and offers the possibility of relaxing boat trips.

There are picturesque lakeside villages nearby, such as Pertisau, which is ideal for hiking and cycling with spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We recommend the beautiful 10 km circuit to the Zwölferkopf hill, with a delicious restaurant at the top with traditional Austrian cuisine. If you’re into road cycling or inline skating, there are beautiful cycle paths around more than half of the lake.

For those looking for relaxation, there are wellness and spa centres offering a wide range of relaxation treatments and therapies. In winter, the Achensee turns into a winter paradise for skiers and snowboarders with many ski slopes and cross-country trails, such as right in Pertisau.

For history buffs, the Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg Museum in Pertisau tells the story of the extraction and use of local shale oil. The Karwendel Nature Park offers the opportunity to observe the local flora and fauna and enjoy the beauty of unspoilt nature an hour’s drive from Achensee. For the more adventurous there is the option of paragliding or climbing on the surrounding peaks.
