The Rofan Mountains, also known as Rofan, are considered one of the most beautiful and adventurous areas in Austrian Tyrol. Visitors to the area around Achensee in particular will find the Rofan literally in the palm of their hands.
This mountain range offers not only breathtaking views of the Achensee, but also a wide range of activities for nature lovers, from hiking and climbing to paragliding and winter sports.
One of the best ways to get to the heart of the Rofan Mountains is to use the Rofanseilbahn, which takes you from the village of Maurach, on the banks of the Achensee, directly below the Gschöllkopf. The cable car allows visitors to easily and comfortably reach a height of over 1,800 metres above sea level, from where they can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding Alpine landscape and Lake Achensee. We recommend hiking to the very top of the Gschöllkopf for even better views of the Rofan, Karwendel, the Inntal valley and the Zillertal Alps. From the top of the Gschöllkopf you can also take the AirRofan Skyglide. This is a special paragliding wing attached to an outstretched rope, under which up to four people can hang. After pulling up to the top end of the rope, the wing is lowered down and passengers experience an adventure evoking the flight of an eagle high above the steep mountainside at speeds of up to 80 km/h.
At the top of the Rofanseilbahn, there are public toilets, a large children’s playground, rest areas and several refreshment options. We recommend the traditional Hütte Erfurter, or the Mauritz Alm mountain hut perched higher up. From the cable car we recommend doing 2 shorter circuits to discover the surrounding area. The full recommended route can be found here. Be warned, you may encounter the need to climb smaller yarrow and the like on this trail. If heights scare you, we recommend choosing a different circular route. There are actually countless to choose from.
