The six Christmas markets are spread around the cozy city center, all within easy walking distance. Each has its own unique vibe, and all of them are amazing. I will show you not only the Christmas markets, but also other wonderful places that are especially magical during the festive season. And don’t worry—if you feel tired of the crowds in the streets, I’d love to take you to some calmer spots in nature on the edge of Münster. I’m sure you will love Christmas time in Münster just as much as I do.

This itinerary is planned for three days, but if you prefer to move faster (which I wouldn’t recommend), you can see everything in two full days. Or feel free to pick only the places you like the most. Reaching spots like Rieselfelder, Hof Renfert-Deitermann, and the Krippenweg can be a bit challenging without a car—especially on Sundays—so you can easily save them for your next visit. All the other places are really accessible on foot, with either short or pleasantly longer walks.

Münster: Wonderful Christmas Time itinerary was designed mainly for a weekend getaway, yet it works beautifully even during weekdays. The only thing you’ll miss mid-week is the Westphalen Christmas Market at the Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum. The colourful and spacious weekly market in front of St. Paulus Cathedral, however, is kept also on Wednesdays.

Choosing a weekday visit lets you enjoy Münster in a gentler, calmer Christmas atmosphere — perfect for slow wandering, soft lights, and peaceful moments. Weekends, while wonderfully festive, can become quite crowded due to the city’s popularity during Advent.

Accommodation

I have chosen some lovely hotels for you, each with a different ambience, all very chic and unforgettable. Wasserschloss Wilkinghege and Romantik Hotel Hof zur Linde are traditionally luxurious Westphalian hotels where you can truly feel the history of this German region. The smaller Mauritzhof Hotel and the large ATLANTIC Hotel Münster are both newly renovated (or newly built) and offer the highest standard of accommodation. Factory Hotel is located in a former brewery and features industrial chic. The last one, the modern H4 Hotel Münster, is situated right in the city center, so everything is within easy reach.

Day 1

Getting into the Christmas Spirit

Three Christmas markets, a beautifully decorated shopping centre, glittering surrounding streets, and an evening walk among the XMAS Lights will fill your first day in Münster with festive magic.

Depending on where you’re staying, you can stroll to the first Christmas market (open from 11:00) right in the heart of the city, or choose to take a bus or your own car — all parking options are listed in the itinerary details.

The X-MS Christmas Market is the youngest one, but perfect for tasting traditional treats and warming up in the holiday spirit.

X-MS Christmas Market

X-MS Christmas Market

Münster

The X-MS Christmas Market is Münster’s newest and most modern festive market. Under the motto “From Münster for Münster”, it focuses on regional and sustainable products. Its contemporary stalls showcase locally made gifts, innovative crafts, and delicious modern cuisine — all sourced from Münster and the surrounding Münsterland region.

From there, you can wander towards Ludgeristraße, Münster’s lively shopping mile. Here you’ll find many well-known shops, including the elegant malls Peek & Cloppenburg and Galeria Münster— both offering convenient public restrooms. Your next stop will be the Münster Arkaden, where you can enjoy a late lunch or take the opportunity to visit the remarkable and truly unique Pablo Picasso Museum.

Shopping Gallery Münster Arkaden

Shopping Gallery Münster Arkaden

Münster

Located right in the heart of Münster, Münster Arkaden has been a favorite shopping destination since its opening in 2005. Designed by the renowned architecture firm Kleihues + Kleihues, the modern glass-and-stone structure blends harmoniously with the historic façades of the Prinzipalmarkt on one side and the Picasso Museum on the other.

During the Christmas season, the gallery transforms into a winter wonderland — beautifully decorated with sparkling light displays, elegant garlands, and a majestic Christmas tree. Don’t miss the Danish lifestyle store Søstrene Grene in the basement, where you’ll find plenty of creative holiday ideas and gifts. The large Thalia bookstore offers a wide selection of wall calendars, along with an excellent range of English-language books and international magazines. In the center of the gallery, you’ll find a stylish bistro serving delicious specialties from the famous Holstein Delikatessen. For a sweet treat, stop by Eiscafé Milano, a popular ice cream shop that completes the culinary experience.

From the upper floors, you can enjoy lovely views of the festive decorations below or relax with a cup of coffee while sampling some traditional Westphalian delicacies. The gallery is open daily and also serves as a convenient passage connecting Prinzipalmarkt and Lüdgeristraße.

The spacious, three-story indoor courtyard offers direct access to numerous shops, the Pablo Picasso Art Museum, and the Pablo Restaurant. Opened in 2000, the Pablo Picasso Museum in Münster is Germany’s first and only Picasso museum. Housed behind historic, protected façades in the heart of the old town, it features rotating exhibitions on Pablo Picasso and his fellow artists of the Classical Modern era, including Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall. The museum’s core collection is a unique set of around 800 Picasso lithographs — one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The museum is open every day, except Monday, from 10a.m. till 6p.m.

If you walk from Ludgeristraße through the Münster Arkaden, you will emerge onto Rothenburg Street. Take a moment to look around — it’s a charming residential street — and then turn left towards the Aegidii Christmas Market. And don’t forget to look up: on house number 13, the wonderful World Time Clock with its Carillon reveals a little piece of hidden magic.

Rothenburg – A Street with a Great Vibe

Rothenburg – A Street with a Great Vibe

Münster

Rothenburg Street connects the Prinzipalmarkt with the Aegidii Christmas Market and is lined with charming shops and bakeries.

Particularly interesting is house number 13, where the World Time Clock with Carillon (Weltzeituhr mit Glockenspiel) is located. Built in 1958 during the city’s post-war reconstruction, this striking column is crowned with a globe surrounded by smaller celestial spheres symbolizing the universe. Beneath it, 43 bells form a carillon that plays daily at 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. As the music rings out, moving figures appear, depicting two key moments in Münster’s history: the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 and the traditional merchants’ guild dance. The four symbolic figures below — an astronomer, a monk, a painter, and a merchant — represent science, faith, art, and trade. The clock is not only a technical masterpiece but also a symbol of Münster’s resilience and cultural richness — a city that beautifully unites history, art, and innovation. Don’t miss the performance when the bells bring history to life in the heart of the city.

At the end of Rothenburg Street, on the right-hand side, you’ll find a beautiful example of modern architecture, tastefully integrated into the city’s historic surroundings – The LWL Museum of Art and Culture. This amazing museum was opened in 2014. The building represents modern architecture with clear, long lines and sandstone walls. The museum spans 1,000 years of art, from the Middle Ages to contemporary works. Its modern sandstone and glass façades blend beautifully into the old town, creating a bright and open space to explore. Visitors can enjoy both the museum’s remarkable permanent collections — including the Cremer Collection, works by the tom Ring family, and modern masterpieces — and ever-changing exhibitions that offer fresh perspectives on art and culture.

A visit to the LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur is a great option in case of bad weather.

Mocca d’or

Münster • $$

Tucked away in a charming, vine-covered side street near Rothenburg, Mocca d’or has been a beloved local institution since 1999. Spread over three inviting floors with cozy terraces, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a festive day at Münster’s Christmas market.

Every antipasti, pasta, pizza, and dessert is lovingly made in-house — from fresh-baked focaccia to creamy tiramisù — bringing a true taste of Italy to the city’s winter magic.

Soon, the Aegidii Christmas Market opens right before you. After soaking in its cosy charm, you may want to step into the architectural gem nearby — the LWL Museum of Art and Culture — a beautiful place to pause, warm up, and admire masterpieces away from the winter air.

Aegidii Christmas Market

Aegidii Christmas Market

Münster

The Aegidii Christmas Market, located on Aegidiimarkt Square, is marked by its six-meter-high wooden pyramid — its unmistakable landmark. Though smaller than others, this market charms visitors with its cozy ambiance, Christmas decorations, and surrounding shops and restaurants. Alongside traditional gifts and treats, each year brings a new themed Christmas photo spot, perfect for holiday pictures.

By now, early evening will drift in, and the sparkling lights will glow brighter. This is when the true Christmas enchantment awakens, and the largest Christmas market in the city awaits you.
I recommend taking the path across the beautiful Domplatz square — it offers a magnificent view of St. Paulus Cathedral, glowing softly in the winter dusk. Turn right and walk toward Münster’s iconic landmark, the Historic Town Hall. A narrow passage to the left of the building will guide you straight into a true Christmas wonderland.

Christmas Market Around the City Hall

Münster

The oldest and largest Christmas market in Münster, this festive gem is nestled in the inner courtyard of the City Hall, partly sheltered beneath a romantic canopy of lights. Here you’ll find everything that makes Christmas come alive — from stalls selling mulled wine, punch, sausages, mushrooms, pancakes, and waffles to charming stands with handcrafted gifts and beautiful decorations. Children will adore the nostalgic carousel, while adults can enjoy a warm drink and soak in the special glow.

And if you still haven’t had your fill of festive magic, the final stop of your first day in Münster is waiting: the XMAS Lights at the Allwetterzoo Münster.

The easiest way to reach them is by car, but you can also take a bus or enjoy a longer evening walk — a pleasant way to unwind after a day filled with delicious Christmas treats and glowing holiday cheer.
