For a relatively small country, Slovenia has an incredible amount to offer. Whether it’s beautiful lakes with clear water, the peaks of the Julian Alps, gorges, waterfalls, but also access to the sea and beautiful cities. And you can experience all this and more with our summer itinerary for 7 days in this beautiful country in the south of Europe.

You’ll spend your first days in the Julian Alps before moving further south to the Italian border. From there, you’ll return to the Alps via Slovenia’s capital city and finish your final days at the most famous lakes, Bled and Bohinj.

The itinerary combines nature, cities, hiking, but also a bit of relaxation – both at the well-known and lesser-known lakes, as well as by the sea. You’ll also see neighbouring Italy, which is really close by.

Day 1

Arrival and surroundings of Kranjska Gora

The first day will be marked by arrival, acclimatization in the area of the Julian Alps and the immediate surroundings of Kranjska Gora.

We deliberately start our journey in Kransjke Gore, which is close to the border with Italy and Austria, not far from the main road through Villach. It is a relatively large town that attracts tourists not only in summer but also in winter.

1

Kranjska Gora

Slovenia

Kranjska Gora is a mountain town in northwestern Slovenia, located in the heart of the Julian Alps, near the borders with Austria and Italy. It is known primarily as a popular ski resort, but its charm extends far beyond the winter months. Thanks to its location near the Triglav National Park, it offers ideal conditions for active holidays all year round – from hiking, cycling, climbing to relaxing by the lakes and in the thermal baths.

In winter, Kranjska Gora turns into a winter sports centre with quality ski slopes, cross-country skiing trails and the famous ski jumps in nearby Planica. In the summer, the mountains, the Peričnik waterfall, the Vršič pass or the nearby Jasna lake are a great place to relax. The town is also very family-friendly and offers a wide range of accommodation and restaurants with local cuisine.

Kranjska Gora retains its alpine character, but is also well equipped for modern travellers. It is an ideal destination for those looking for a combination of mountain adventure and relaxed atmosphere, whether for a weekend or a longer holiday.

We recommend staying in or near Kranjska Gora for 2 nights so that you can comfortably take in everything the area has to offer. As well as exploring the town, we recommend venturing slightly beyond its borders to the beautiful Jasna Lake. It is about 1 km walk from the town.

TIP: There are several good restaurants and a larger shop in Kranjska Gora. We can also recommend the Planika bakery right on the main street.

Lake Jasna

Kranjska Gora

Lake Jasna is located near the Slovenian town of Kranjska Gora and is one of the most famous places in the Julian Alps. It consists of two interconnected artificial lakes with crystal clear water, surrounded by forests and mountain peaks such as Prisojnik. Jasna is an ideal place for relaxing, walking and refreshing during the summer months – the water is cool, but incredibly refreshing.

The lake shoreline is landscaped for visitors – there are wooden piers, benches, a café and the famous statue of the ibex, which has become a symbol of the place and a popular photo spot. Thanks to its accessibility and proximity to the centre of Kranjska Gora, the lake is also popular for short stops on the way to the mountains or the Vršič Pass.

Lake Jasna is beautiful in every season – in spring and summer it invites you to picnic, in autumn it looks like a postcard and in winter it is a quiet place surrounded by snow. It is the perfect combination of natural beauty, tranquillity and easy accessibility that makes it one of the most impressive corners of Slovenia.

On the shore of the lake there is not only the famous statue of the ibex, but also several restaurants, bars, piers with the possibility of swimming in the lake. The area around the lake is quiet, even in large crowds, especially if you walk around it. It is great to relax on the shore and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding peaks and forests. We have to admit that this place really captivated us and we visited here twice during our trip.

There is also a suspension bridge at the beginning of the lake, which you will pass on your way from Kranjska Gora.

I’m sure you were hungry after the first day, so we can recommend a restaurant near the city centre.

Good restaurant in a good location in Kranjska Gora. Parking is available at the restaurant and the menu is rich. We only encountered relatively slow service, however the food was good.
