Ånderdalen National Park on the island of Senja offers a unique insight into Norway’s subarctic nature.

It covers an area of over 125 km² and is situated on Norway’s second largest island, Senja. The park is home to dense pine and spruce forests, peat bogs and picturesque lakes. Dramatic landscape changes from deep forests to open areas make this place a true wilderness. The ecosystem is a truly unique and, for us, unrepeatable experience anywhere else. Thanks to its diverse landscape, the park is home to many species of plants and animals. In the forested parts of the park you can come across reindeer, elk or foxes. It is also a paradise for ornithologists, as it is home to several species of birds, including rare species such as the snowy owl, which we were privileged to meet.

Ånderdalen National Park is a popular hiking destination. There are a number of marked trails that lead visitors through the most interesting parts of the park. Its clean rivers and lakes also make it an ideal place for fishing. One of the main aims of the establishment of Ånderdalen National Park was to preserve the subarctic ecosystem of the region and to protect rare species of plants and animals. The park plays a key role in protecting and preserving this unique habitat for future generations.

Ånderdalen National Park has several entry points scattered around its borders. These entrances serve as starting points for many hiking trails and paths in the park. Information boards and maps of the park are available at some of the entry points. We entered the park from the Fv860 road across from the Norwegian Wild campground.

As far as treks go, we personally recommend the trek to Lake Åndervatnet. If you’re lucky, you’re bound to see reindeer along the way, so don’t forget your cameras!
