The Brouwersgracht is a canal in the very centre of Amsterdam and is supposedly the prettiest you’ll find here.
The canal got its name in 1594, after the many breweries that were located in the district. In 1782, on Driehoekstraat near Brouwersgracht, the last Amsterdam gin and liqueur distillery, De Ooievaar, was established. It is still there today and you can visit it. Most of the buildings around the canal were formerly warehouses for goods, which were subsequently converted into residential buildings. Well, they’ve done a great job of converting them. Just look how photogenic this place is!
You have the opportunity to experience a beautiful boat ride. You will be attracted to small boats as well as larger cruise ships. The smaller boats are often manned by students who speak perfect English and know a lot of interesting things about the city. And if you want to watch the water while enjoying good drinks and food, don’t miss the garden of the De Belhamel restaurant. Here I understood why Amsterdam is called the Venice of the North.
