Castel Sant’Elmo is one of the most imposing and best located historic fortresses in Naples. Built on Vomero Hill, it offers a magnificent panoramic view of the whole of Naples, including the bay, Vesuvius and the surrounding countryside. From the top of the castle, you have a breathtaking view of the city with its narrow streets, colorful houses and the blue sea in the distance. This view is one of the most beautiful in Naples and is a great place for photography.
The fortress was built in the 14th century as a defensive structure and gradually underwent several reconstructions. Today it is open to the public and serves as a museum, hosting exhibitions on the history and culture of the region. In addition to the castle itself, there is also an adjacent area with beautiful gardens and resting areas.
Throughout its history, this fortress has been used not only for military purposes, but also as a prison and even as a television broadcasting station. The site has retained its historic character and, combined with modern art exhibitions, creates a fascinating contrast between past and present.
Admission:
Admission to the castle is €5 for adults, with a reduced admission fee of €2.50 for EU citizens aged 18-25. Every Tuesday, admission is reduced to €2.50 for all visitors, and children under the age of 18 are admitted free of charge.
Recommendation:
If you are already in the area, you should definitely not miss a visit to the Certosa di San Martino Monastery, which is located next to the castle. Originally founded in the 14th century, this monastery offers breathtaking views of Naples, and its historic interior is filled with artwork that will transport you back to a time when the monastery was a centre of spiritual life.
Transportation:
On foot: from the centre of Naples you can walk to the Vomero district, known for its elegant shops and cafés.
Funiculars: the easiest way to get to Vomero is to use one of the three funiculars:
All of these funiculars are part of public transport and tickets cost approximately €1.10 per journey. Tickets can be purchased from ticket machines at stations or via mobile apps.
