Are you going from Pisa to Florence? Make a half-day stop in the small medieval town of Lucca. Walk around the preserved Renaissance walls, sit in the shade of the park and have a little picnic. Then stop for a glass of prosecco in the unique circular Amphitheatre Square. You can often watch street performers taking advantage of the good echo here. The city of Lucca is famous for its various musical and theatrical performances and summer festivals.
The atmosphere is relaxed, there is no rush in the morning and the first shops open before noon. The centre and the surrounding streets are not crowded with tourists. All the sights, from the cathedrals, squares, to the walls, can be walked around in 2-3 hours. But be sure to reserve some time to buy the local specialities – chestnut cake and sheep’s cheese. For a slice of pastry, stop by the Forno Amedeo Giusti bakery.
