Castello di Udine

You can find Castello di Udine on a hill right above the historic city center, just a few steps from the main Piazza Libertà. The current building dates back to the 16th century, when it replaced an older castle destroyed by an earthquake. Legend has it that the hill was built up by Attila the Hun’s soldiers so he could watch nearby Aquileia burn, but in reality, the castle’s history goes much deeper, and today its premises house several interesting museums and galleries.

For us, this place is mainly about the views. From the castle courtyard, you’ll see all of Udine in the palm of your hand, and in good weather, you can see all the way to the Alpine peaks to the north. The walk up is totally fine and only takes a few minutes – you can either take the path under the beautiful arcades or the stairs directly from the square. It’s an ideal short stop when you want to enjoy the city from above and take a few photos before heading back down into the streets for a glass of good Italian wine.
