Piazza della Libertà

Piazza della Libertà might be a fairly small square, but we think it’s one of the most beautiful you’ll see in northern Italy. You’ll find it right below the castle hill, and the stunning Venetian architecture will catch your eye immediately, especially the Loggia del Lionello town hall with its pink and white marble and the clock tower on the opposite side. Even though it’s basically just a small space in the center, it’s incredibly photogenic and radiates that authentic Italian vibe.

A visit won’t take much of your time, but it’s definitely worth stopping by for a bit. We recommend combining a tour of the square with a walk up to Castello di Udine, as the most beautiful stairs under the arcades lead from here straight up to the castle. If you stop by in the summer, there’s a good chance you’ll catch a cultural event—open-air concerts or various festivals are often held here, giving the square an even livelier atmosphere. It’s simply the perfect starting point for wandering through the old town.
