On the first day of our journey along the pilgrimage route of the Journey of Bohemia, we arrived in the evening in a beautiful corner of our country, which is dominated by the castle of Český Šternberk, towering on a rocky ridge. This fabulous castle is located in the Benešov district, in the Central Bohemia region. The castle was built in the 13th century and gradually rebuilt. It will delight you with its well-preserved Gothic architecture and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The Sázava River meanders around the valley, which is very popular among boaters, so you will find several camping sites where you can park your car and especially your boat. Whether you come by land or by water, you will be enchanted by this place.
The castle offers visitors an extensive tour, during which you can see a total of fifteen rooms, including the impressive Knights’ Hall. The total tour time is approximately 50 minutes. To the south of the castle is the bastion, which originally served as a famine chamber and was also part of the defensive system. The tower is designed in the shape of a sharp spike, whose purpose was to deflect enemy missiles to the sides. If you climb the spiral staircase to the top of the tower, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.
