The Colosseum, officially known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is not only the most iconic monument in Rome, but also one of the most impressive places in the world to experience the atmosphere of ancient Rome. Built between 70 and 80 AD during the reigns of the emperors Vespasian and Titus, it was originally used to host gladiatorial fights, entertainment shows and dramatic scenes that took place in the huge arena. The Colosseum was capable of holding up to 70,000 spectators, making it the largest amphitheatre in the Roman world. In those days, not only the citizens of Rome came here, but people from all over the empire came to watch bloody gladiatorial battles, executions and even simulations of naval battles.

Today, when you walk through the grounds, you can imagine what it was like to watch these spectacular shows. You can visit the arena itself, where the biggest fights took place, or walk through the underground passages where gladiators and animals were kept before entering the arena. From the upper floors of the Colosseum, you can enjoy a breathtaking view not only of the Colosseum itself, but also of the entire Forum Romanum and the surrounding Roman landscape.

Interestingly, in the past the Colosseum was arranged according to social status. Senators, women, slaves and the emperor had their own entrances and seating areas. Today, thankfully, it’s much simpler – all you need is a single QR code to enter all the zones. If you’re into photography, it’s worth visiting the viewing point on Via Nicola Salvi or in Colle Oppio Park, where you can get a spectacular view of the Colosseum in all its majesty.

The Colosseum is not only a historical gem, but also a symbol of the power and entertainment of ancient Rome. Thanks to modern technology and renovations, it can still be a living testimony to the past, offering an experience that takes you back to the days when it was the centre of Roman entertainment and power.
