Trieste

Trieste is a port city in northeastern Italy, located just on the border with Slovenia. Its location on the border between the Latin, Slavic and Germanic worlds gives it a unique cosmopolitan character. In the past it was an important trading centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and its historical heritage is still evident in the architecture, culture and atmosphere of the city.

Trieste enchants visitors with Piazza Unità d’Italia, which opens directly onto the sea, and beautiful Viennese-style cafés such as the famous Caffè San Marco. There are also Roman ruins, a medieval castle and the imposing Miramare Castle, which rises above the sea just outside the centre.
