Place description
The name Z Bend comes from the curved shape of the river, which cuts into the red sandstone and creates a stunning natural scenery. This trail is approximately 2.6 miles long (round trip) and is considered moderately challenging as it involves descents/ascents on metal ladders, narrow rock passages, and boulder climbing. There is a second option, and that is to go “only” to Z Bend Lookout, which is only 1.2 kilometers long.
The best time to hike is early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are more bearable and the sun creates beautiful hues on the cliffs. It is important to carry plenty of water, sturdy footwear and be prepared for the physical challenge. For less experienced hikers or families with children, the shorter Z Bend Lookout Trail offers beautiful views of the canyon without requiring a strenuous descent.
