Gole Alcantara

Gole Alcantara is a botanical and geological park located on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, about 20 km from the city of Taormina. This beautiful place is famous for its unique basalt rock formations – gorges created by the Alcantara River. These formations were created by volcanic activity when lava met water and solidified rapidly, resulting in dramatic, high basalt walls and columns. The walls of these gorges reach heights of up to 50 metres and form narrow, winding passages. The Alcantara River flowing through the gorges is clear and cold, ideal for refreshment in the summer months. There are several small waterfalls in the area that add to the beauty of the place and which we recommend visiting as well.

The nearest major town in the area is Taormina, from where you can reach Gole Alcantara by car or with organised tours. Parking is available right at the entrance to the gorges and there is parking for both cars and motorhomes. The contribution to the parking fee is voluntary.

In addition to the classic entrance to the park, where you can discover the corners on your own, the park administration organizes various excursions and activities, such as body rafting, canyoning, shuttle bus tours or bike tours. The park has 2 entrances. Navigation will take you to the main entrance with parking, information point, restaurant and ticket office. At the main entrance, the basic entrance fee for adults is €13 and €9 for children, where the price includes a lift to take you down to the gorges. You won’t therefore have to climb stairs, which families with children will appreciate.

If you want to save money, there is another entrance about 150 meters from the main entrance, used by the locals. However, the gorges can only be reached by stairs and the entrance fee is €1.50.

Opening times during the warmer months are from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, or until 8:00 pm during the high season.
