If you are looking for a place where history, art and nature intertwine, Hospital Kuks is the ideal choice. This Baroque gem in the Elbe Valley will enchant you with its architecture and its throwback to a time when art and medicine were closely linked. It is a great destination for a trip in the Hradec Králové region.
Cultural events are often held in the gardens and courtyard, and the botanical gardens are a delight in summer. The Kuks Hospital was built in the 17th century by Count Sporck as a hospital for the poor and a centre of Baroque art inspired by European models. Its sculptures “Virtues and Vices” by Matthias Braun reflect the human soul and every story.
In the 18th century, Kuks was a famous spa place where celebrations took place and wine flowed in the fountains. The main attractions are the Holy Trinity Church, the tomb of Count Sporck and the Baroque pharmacy U Granátového jablka. Here, equipment with powders from the skull of a hanged man and the “unicorn horn” have been preserved. Every step in Kuks transports you to history.
During our visit we chose the Hospital and History of Pharmacies tours and spent about three hours in Kuks. The tours were very engaging – we admired the masterful sculptures, listened to interesting facts about the pharmacies and their fascinating preparations. It’s a place we’ll definitely love to return to.

How to get here:
There is a paid parking lot right next to the hospital, which unfortunately has a limited capacity and is often full in good weather. There are two other paid car parks in the village of Kuks, from where a pleasant walk through the maple alley will take you to the hospital. However, we think the best option is to take the train, as the train station is just a few steps away from the hospital itself.
