Lagoa do Vento

Lagoa do Vento is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in the heart of Maidera, but it’s definitely worth a visit. The large lake along with the waterfall are breathtaking, plus it offers a view of the second waterfall, Risco, which joins the lake and continues up the steep valley. Lake Vento, especially in the summer months, lends itself directly to a short refreshing (or rather hardening) dip, and its surroundings make it an ideal mid-route stop for a snack overlooking the countryside.

The lake can be reached by several paths and it is possible to combine the hike with some other nearby waterfalls or lakes (Risco waterfall, or a bit more distant waterfall 25 Fontes); we chose a total of about 6 kilometers from Rabaçal car park. The trail has an elevation gain of nearly 300 meters and although you have to set aside a couple of hours to hike, it is not a strenuous hike.

About halfway along the route, it is possible to stop at a café Rabaçal Nature Spot Café which, in addition to coffee, kombucha and a range of delicious pastries and cakes, is also notable for the presence of a number of tiny birds that flock around the outdoor terrace and are not afraid of visitors – especially if you order something to eat.
