Poco do Candeeiro

The Poco do Candeeiro waterfall is definitely one of the lesser known waterfalls and lakes in Madeira, offering undisturbed tranquillity in nature without the crowds of tourists. The site is located in the mountains south of the town of Seixal, near the village of Chão da Ribeira.

The waterfall follows the Ribeira do Seixal River, which is almost dry, especially in the summer months, allowing you to hike along the riverbed. The waterfall can be reached in two ways – from below (where there is a large lake below the waterfall) or from above (a less frequented option, to which you have to cross the riverbed; however, it offers swimming in the pools above the waterfall and a view of the abyss with a waterfall tens of meters high).

There are a number of other waterfalls in the Chão da Ribeira valley and the village is an ideal starting point for lesser known hikes in Madeira. The Poco do Candeeiro waterfall is one of the most easily accessible waterfalls in the valley, but even so, it’s more of a hidden gem of Madeira where, with a bit of luck, you’ll be able to admire the beauty of the waterfall all on your own.
