The Lava Show is a unique attraction that is the only one in the world that allows you to experience real flowing lava at a safe distance. The whole show is based on a fascinating process: staff melt basalt in a huge furnace to an incredible 1,100°C and then release the hot mass directly into the showroom in front of the audience. It’s an incredible spectacle that you can literally smell and feel. You can actually feel the heat immediately, along with the crackling of the cooling rock, and see the brightest shades of orange.
During the show, experienced presenters will explain how volcanic activity has shaped Iceland, and they will “play” with the flowing lava in front of you to demonstrate its properties. The show is very interactive and educational, so you will learn what happens when lava touches ice or how different rock formations are created. Currently, you can visit the show in two locations – in Reykjavík or in the town of Vík on the south coast, which is an ideal stop during your roadtrip.
